The 2025 summer fireworks festival series in Fukuoka Prefecture, Japan, concluded successfully in mid-to-late August. As an iconic summer cultural event in Japan, it presented a folk feast that combines visual appeal with environmental value to hundreds of thousands of spectators.
The century-old Ashiya Fireworks Festival, held on July 26, kicked off the series. Of the 5,000 fireworks shells set off, 30% used biodegradable paper tubes and low-sulfur propellants. The 250-meter-wide "Niagara Falls" fireworks display, paired with an underwater fireworks matrix, created a classic visual spectacle.
The Chikugo River Fireworks Festival on August 5 set a record for scale in western Japan. With 15,000 fireworks shells launched across 6 sub-venues, synchronized firing was achieved through an AI control system. Meanwhile, a matrix of 300 drones creating light effects performed in coordination with music, attracting 420,000 to 450,000 spectators.
The Kanmon Strait Fireworks Festival on August 13 marked the conclusion of the series through inter-prefectural collaboration. A total of 18,000 fireworks shells were set off on both banks of Moji Port (Fukuoka Prefecture) and Shimonoseki City (Yamaguchi Prefecture). A massive firework with a diameter of 450 meters and 10 light boats formed a three-dimensional visual network, enabling this grand event—attended by 300,000 spectators—to achieve an upgrade in environmental friendliness.
